3D Vector-Field Data Processing and Visualisation on Graphical Processing Units

Abstract

Vector-field data arises from applications contexts including: sensor outputs; flow-fields for image analysis; and dataset visualisation. We have experimented with various approaches to analysing and visualising vector-field data sets. We extend this to three-dimensional vector-field data and present various ways to process them in real or near-real time using data parallelism. We show how to implement contouring and 3D line integration techniques using graphical processing units and report on the performance attainable. We discuss how these techniques can be applied in processing vector-field signal data in interactive applications.
